Denim is a long-surviving clothing item and a perennial favorite among men and women. Denim shirts provide many accessorizing opportunities, but perhaps a little extra care in coordination. 

1. Skirts and Undershirts

   • Denim shirts allow women the chance to bring color into their outfits in different ways. Pair a buttoned-up denim shirt with a patterned skirt; paisley works well, but a checkered skirt might be evocative of a school uniform. Or wear a monochrome skirt or trouser with a bright or patterned T-shirt, pulling an unbuttoned or partially unbuttoned denim shirt over the top.

   Casual Dress for Men

   • Men can wear a well-pressed denim shirt with khakis or other light dress pant for a casual look. A darker-toned blazer and monochromatic matte tie dress the look up while never looking too formal.

   What to Avoid

   • Avoid pairing denim with more denim, unless doing so for practical reasons or for a denim-themed event. Pairing any material with itself tends to wash out a look. Denim on denim in particular reminds people of cowboys and square dancing, so avoid this unless you happen to be a cowboy or are going to a square-dance.
